Public Service Announcement for Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District
For property and business owners in the KLWTD Service area (between mile marker 106 and mile marker 92) who are currently connected to the KLWTD central sewer system, the following information is provided to assist you with hurricane preparedness relative to your sewer system:
While the central collection system and processing plant are designed to operate during most significant storm events, there are a few conditions where service may be interrupted. It is important that you understand these situations. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these procedures and keep this information in a safe place.
WIDE SPREAD POWER OUTAGES
District facilities are on generator back-up and are regularly tested and prepared for power interruptions. If you have an on-site system, however, you may need to conserve sewer usage until power is restored to your home.
|Heavy rain with extreme winds (over 50 Mph), can pose a
threat to power generators. The system may be temporarily interrupted during these periods but will be restored immediately after.
|Rising water above the in-home drains can allow for the
infiltration of large amounts of water into the sewer system. During periods of flooding, portions of the collection system may be temporarily shut down to avoid overwhelming the system.
|MANDATORY||Reduced||During periods of mandatory evacuations, service may be|
|EVACUATIONS||Usage||interrupted. However, the system will be restored usually|
|Recommended||before re-entry is allowed to the general public.|
What does “Reduce Usage Recommended” mean: Refrain from using washing machines and dishwashers, minimize sink usage, flush solid human wastes as needed but allow limited amounts of liquid wastes to accumulate in a toilet bowl (for short periods of time only) before flushing.
